Mr Donner’s Scarf

Mr Donner loved his scarf. Made of blue and white wool, it had been knitted by his mother and was very old. He always wore it in winter. But one day, he could not find it. He hunted for it all over his house, in cupboards and even in the kitchen but it seemed to have vanished in a very mysterious way.
He had to buy a few things and give his clothes to the laundry. So, he closed the door and went to the shops.
As he locked the door and stepped out, he saw a squirrel scampering up a tree with a long blue thread trailing in its mouth. It reminded him of his lost scarf and he walked along sadly to the laundry.
He gave his clothes and then went on to the grocer’s, the bakery and the meat shop. He bought all the things he needed. Then he walked back home carrying everything.
Once again, he saw the squirrel scampering up the tree, this time carrying a white thread. Puzzled, Mr Donner went in. As he stood in the kitchen putting things in the cupboard, he glanced out of the window and saw the squirrel again, with a blue thread this time. Now his attention was really caught.

“This fellow seems to have an unending supply of blue and white threads,” he thought, “Where did he get them from?”
Mr Donner decided to watch the squirrel quietly to see where it had found the threads. He traced them from its nest back to the hedge. Mr Donner went to the hedge and looked carefully.
“My scarf!” he exclaimed. For there, caught in the lower branches of the hedge, was his blue and white scarf. Some of its threads were loose. The squirrel would come down, pull out some threads and carry them all the way up the tree to its nest.
He found that the squirrel was not the only one getting the threads. A little sparrow and a small field mouse had also discovered the scarf! Both of them came in turn to pull out the threads one by one and took off to line their nests.

Mr Donner was fascinated. “It was Mother’s scarf, of course,” he thought, “But she loved these little creatures. She would spread crumbs for them and put out a bowl of water too. I’m sure she’d be happy they were using the scarf for making their nests!” He went in feeling good.
