Mount Rushmore is a mountainside sculpture drawing of four presidents of the United States. It is located in the Black Hills, Keystone, South Dakota, United States. While the construction for this mammoth granite sculpture began in 1927, construction slowed and eventually stopped by 1941 due to lack of funds.

Why it is special: Mount Rushmore was started as a memorial to the great political patrons of the United States. The Presidents, whose faces have been chiselled into the granite of the mountainside, included George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Spanning 1,278.45 acres across the mountainside, the faces of all four presidents were completed by 1939. But after the death of the artist in 1941, his son could not complete the sculptures due to lack of funds.
