Morris’s Car

Mr Morris was a poor farmer, but he had a car that he loved dearly. It was old and the paint was faded, but he had had it for many years and did not wish to change it. He had even given it a name: Miss Lucy.
One day, Mr Morris took Miss Lucy to the neighbouring village on market day. He had to buy some things for his farm. He parked Miss Lucy near the bakery and went off to make his purchases.
Miss Lucy could smell the lovely fragrance of fresh bread and cookies wafting out of the bakery.
‘What good things humans eat!’ she thought, ‘All I get is oil and petrol and water!’
Miss Lucy thought that she would wander around the market and see things. So, she took off and was soon admiring the stalls of the horses and the sheep-pens, the large tubs of vegetables and fruits, the flower shop, the children playing and farmers buying and selling things.

Mr Morris came back to find that Miss Lucy had vanished! He began to hunt for her in the market. None seemed to know where she was.
He spent the whole afternoon running around the market looking for Miss Lucy. He sat down exhausted, and ordered a cup of tea. He heard a familiar ‘Parp! Parp!’ Miss Lucy! That was her horn!
He looked up to find Miss Lucy parked on the other side of the road. She had a large and colourful umbrella, a daisy chain hung in front of her and there were children clinging to her doors! And there were a hen, a duck and a sheep also sitting in it!
Mr Morris rubbed his eyes because he simply couldn’t believe it. Miss Lucy had clearly gone mad! But she had become so popular in the market that everyone wanted a ride in her.
Mr Morris suddenly had a bright idea! He quickly wrote a placard that said, ‘One penny for a ride.’ And very soon, he had a bagful of pennies for the rides. That day, he and Miss Lucy went home with the coins jingling.

Now, Miss Lucy had a new coat of red paint and Mr Morris had a new hat and coat and even a new pair of shoes! Every market day Mr Morris and Miss Lucy could be seen giving wonderful rides to the children of the village!
