The Metropolitan Museum of Art is popularly known as the MET. It is the largest art museum in New York, United States. The Metropolitan Museum was founded in 1870 and formally opened in 1872.
Why it is special: The MET was created for the sole purpose of bringing art and art related education to the United States. The MET comprises more than 2 million pieces of artwork that are bifurcated into 17 curatorial departments including American and modern art, African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, Indian and Islamic Art. It also houses an encyclopaedic collection of objects including musical instruments, costumes, weapons and armour from across the world.
