Margaret’s Fear

Maggie and Margaret were sisters. Maggie was 10, while her little sister Margaret was five years younger than she. Their family had moved into a new town and so they had just shifted into another house. The house was large and had lots of nooks and corners. Margaret was particularly scared of its basement, which was very dark and huge. The wooden steps that led into the basement would creak in the dark, and then Margaret would start crying. Even though the basement had a bulb yet it did not light up the entire place. So, Margaret never went to the basement alone. She would beg her elder sister Maggie or her parents to accompany her to the basement whenever she needed to get something from there. Unlike Margaret, Maggie did not think much about the basement. She was not scared and would tease her little sister about her fear.

Maggie’s Friends

Though Maggie made fun of her sister yet she made sure she went down to the basement with her whenever she asked. “There are monsters in the basement,” Margaret would say. “No, there are not,” Maggie would reply and then take Margaret down to the basement to show her there was nothing to fear. However, one day, Maggie’s new friends came over to the house to play. The children were watching a scary movie and talking about ghosts and monsters. “There are monsters in our basement,” said Margaret, innocently. Maggie’s friends just laughed as they did not really believe in ghosts and monsters. “Show us, won’t you?” they teased Margaret. They then picked her teddy bear up and threw it into the basement. “Go and ask the monster to give your teddy bear back,” they cried out. Maggie was just getting to know the girls, so she did not want to say anything and break her friendship with them.

Margaret is Stuck in Basement

Margaret was very fond of her teddy bear. At night she could sleep only if she cuddled with the teddy bear. She thought that her teddy bear all alone in the dark, dingy basement troubled her. Margaret asked Maggie to accompany her to the basement. “Don’t go with her; let’s see if she will go alone,” cried out one of the mean girls. Maggie just stood there, confused about what to do. Margaret, however, was determined to get her teddy bear and started climbing down the basement stairs. Maggie’s friends then closed the door, throwing Margaret in complete darkness. Margaret banged on the door and started crying. “The monsters will take me,” she screamed. The girls did not open the door. After five minutes, the screams stopped. Maggie quickly opened the door and called out to Margaret. No one answered. “This is not funny, Margaret; come out now,” said Maggie, her voice trembling. She was greeted with silence.

What the Monsters Did

Maggie started crying loudly. Seeing her condition, her friends became scared and left. Maggie called her parents who had gone out and told them about what had happened. They consoled her and said they would be on their way home soon. Meanwhile, they asked her to look for Margaret in the basement. Maggie opened the basement door and switched on the light. She then slowly made her way down the stairs. At the end of it, she stumbled on something and realised it was her little sister. Maggie picked Margaret up and started walking back. Suddenly, she felt something grab her ankle. She kicked it hard and turned around. She was looking into the gleaming red eyes of two girls, smiling wickedly. Hearing Maggie scream, Margaret regained consciousness and both the girls somehow managed to climb out of the basement. Maggie told her parents about the incident. The family moved out of the house that night itself.
