Make a model of a volcano that erupts as a real one in this easy step-by-step experiment.
Things Required:
Soda bottle
Baking pan
1 cup of vinegar
Baking soda
Red food colouring dirt
Directions:
Place the soda bottle in the pan. Shape moist dirt around the bottle to form a mountain. Do not cover the mouth of the bottle and do not get dirt inside the bottle. Pour 1 tablespoonful of baking soda into the bottle. Colour 1 cup of vinegar with the red food colouring, and pour the liquid into the bottle.
This Is What Happens:
Red foam sprays out the top and down the mountain of dirt.
Science Behind It:
The baking soda reacts with the vinegar producing carbon dioxide gas. The gas builds up enough pressure to force the liquid out of the top of the bottle. The mixture of the gas and the liquid produces the foam.
