The Gallicolumba luzonica (scientific name) or Luzon bleeding heart pigeon is only found in the forests of the island Luzon, Philippines. The bird is named such because of the deep crimson red stain on its white chest which resembles a blood stain. The upper-body is an iridescent steel grey colour. The belly and under wings are chestnut in colour. It has a rounded body, with a short tail. There is very little sexual dimorphism. The only difference between the male and the female is that the male is slightly bigger and has a deeper crimson on its chest. Its diet includes seeds, berries and grub. These shy, secretive birds have a clutch-size of 2 eggs, incubated for 17 days. Its IUCN listing is NEAR THREATENED.
