Farmer Bowles and Mrs Bowles had come home with a small bundle. The milkmaid and the cook had been talking. “It’s a girl!” exclaimed the cook, “She’s ever so sweet. They call her ‘Penny’!” Everyone was thrilled! A baby growing up on the farm was a great experience. Each of the creatures wanted to do something for Penny. At night they heard Mrs Bowles singing softly to the make Penny fall asleep. They had never heard such sweet songs! Under the starlight, all the creatures listened and then, to Mrs Bowles, amazement, a strange sound floated in through the window. All the creatures were trying to imitate her singing! The sound was really very strange, but it was soft and loving. Penny fell asleep with a smile on her face! Now every night Mrs Bowles began the lullaby, and all the farm creatures joined in the strange lullaby for Penny!
