
The main purpose of this experiment is to test for the presence of starch in different materials.
Things Required:
Cookie sheet
Eye-dropper
Tincture of Iodine
Testing Samples: notebook paper, cheese, bread, cracker, sugar, apple slice
Directions:
Place the testing samples on the cookie sheet. Place one drop of iodine on each of the testing samples.
This Is What Happens:
The paper, bread and cracker turn a dark blue-purple. The other samples are just stained by the brown iodine solution.
Science Behind It:
Starch combines with iodine to form a blue-purple compound. Only the samples containing starch turn dark where the iodine is added.
