It is grown for its enlarged bulb-like swelling that develops on the stem a few inches above the ground. The plant resembles that of the cabbage by corm sprout long petioles (leaf stems) with leaves. The whole plant is less than 2 ft (0.6 metre) tall. It is a fast-growing plant that can be eaten raw as well as cooked.
