Ananda, the son of King Badfruit, grew up in Champa. When he learnt that his father had been cheated by his own brother, he set out to reclaim his kingdom. While Ananda’s ship sailed at sea, a violent storm damaged his ship. Everybody, except Ananda, was killed. Ananda was the Bodhisattva, so he swam for seven days and nights. Finally, the ocean goddess saved him and laid him before a sacred stone in a garden in Mithila. By then, King Poorfruit had died, leaving behind a daughter, Princess Sujata. Mithila needed a king to rule, so the ministers began their hunt for a new king. A monk proclaimed, “Send out a festive carriage in the kingdom. It will stop before a man who is meant to be a king and able to rule Mithila.” The carriage stopped before Ananda. The ministers crowned him as the King of Mithila.
