Katy’s Holiday

Mrs Benjamin had a cat named Katy. Mrs Benjamin gave her lots of milk and fish, and a cushion to sleep on. Katy could catch all the mice she wanted. But Katy could not go out or have any adventures.
One day, Mrs Benjamin was ill and had to go to hospital. Her niece Amanda came to look after the house and Katy. She opened the door and let Katy out for a walk.
Katy was thrilled! She was having a real holiday at last. Walking down the street, she saw a hole in a fence and put her head in. A large fierce-looking dog rushed at her, barking loudly. Katy took to her heels like a rocket, her fur standing on end!
By the time she stopped running, she was in a street with large cans. There were interesting smells coming from them. She went up to them carefully, looking all around her.
A can that lay on her side had lots of fish’s heads. She settled down for a bite, when she saw a large furry face with green eyes watching her. Soon, there were three more faces.

“Hello,” said Katy, “I’m Katy.”
“What are you doing eating our fish?” asked Green Eyes.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know it was yours,” replied Katy.
The four came out from behind the cans. They were rather wild-looking cats.
“You have to obey us, mind!” Katy agreed. Now she had friends too. They ate all the fish’s heads and, while the other cats went to sleep, Green Eyes decided to take Katy for a tour. They went to a house where a window was open. Green Eyes jumped up and asked Katy to follow.
It was a neat kitchen. There were lots of good things around: cheese and jam, some vegetables and meat, cut and ready for use. There was also a jug of milk. Green Eyes wanted the meat and told Katy to drink the milk.
As soon as Katy began to drink, lots of things happened at once. The jug tipped over and the milk splashed out. The jug crashed and broke. A woman came running in. She shouted and picked up a broom to whack the cats. Green Eyes leapt for the window and Katy ran around the kitchen skidding through the milk.

She got a whack with the broom. Poor Katy! She ran out of the house all the way back home! She was frightened and messy. Amanda cleaned her. Tired out, Katy fell asleep on her cushion.
