All the gods were happy at the birth of Karttikey. They began to urge Shiva to appoint the young Karttikey as the head of their army. Karttikey was made the chief of the gods’ army (senapati) at a grand ceremony. The gods equipped him with various weapons and special powers. His mother Parvati too gifted him a powerful spear. Karttikey and his army set off to eliminate Tarakasur. It was such a magnificent sight! Numerous gods riding their grand chariots and divine carriers, and armed with their very own celestial weapons filled up the skies. The army of each god accompanied him. Meanwhile, Brahma had advised Devsena, the daughter of the Death-god, to pray hard to get Karttikey as her husband. When Shiva was informed about Devsena’s wish, he got Devsena and Karttikey married. That is how Karttikey got the name Devsenapati (Devsena’s husband).
