Juan de la Cosa was born in 1460 in Santona, Cantabria, Spain, and he died on 28th February 1510 (aged 50 years) in Turbaco, Columbia. Juan was a Spanish explorer and cartographer known for his voyages with Christopher Columbus in which they discovered America. In 1499, Juan made a voyage with Amerigo Vespucci and they explored the South American coast. He also explored Columbia and Panama along with two other famous explorers, Bastidas and Vasco Nunez de Balboa.

Do you know: Juan de la Cosa made a map of all the known lands of the New World called ‘Mappa Mundi’ which was the first officialy accepted map of the New World; it gave him considerable fame in Europe.
