Jean-Francois de Galaup

Jean-Francois-de-Galaup

Jean-Francois de Galaup was born on 23rd August 1741 in Albi, France, and he died in 1788 (aged 47 years) in the Solomon Islands. A French naval officer noted for his expedition to the Oceania to complete the discoveries of James Cook in the Pacific area, Jean-Francois intended to correct and complete the maps of the area while trying to establish trade and open new routes. They were to explore both the North and the South Pacific. He touched upon Alaska, East Asia, Japan, Russia, South Pacific and Australia. He sent the news of reaching France soon and sent his journals and charts back to France but he was never heard again.

Do you know: Jean-Francois was also the first European to reach the island of Maui near the present day Hawaiin Islands.
