Japanese Mountain Leech

Japanese-Mountain-Leech

Common name : Japanese mountain leech

Scientific name : Haemadipsa zeylanica

Family : Haemadipsidae

Native to : Japan, regions around Pacific Oceans

Interesting fact : These leeches have 5 sets of eyes!

These leeches have 2 or sometimes even more number of jaws. Their diet is comprised of blood, which they suck off their host by using the suckers they possess on one end and a strong jaw on the other end, which has hundreds of tiny teeth. The teeth are used as an anti-coagulant and numbing compound. While they look slow, these leeches follow their prey by somersaulting at high speeds and at times climbing up trees to jump on unsuspecting prey.
