Helge Ingstad

Helge-Ingstad

Helge Marcus Ingstad was born on 30th December 1899 in Meraker, Norway, and he died on 29th March 2001 (aged 101 years) in Oslo, Norway. Helge was a Norwegian explorer who not only mapped the Norse settlements but also found the remains of a Viking settlement in New Foundland, Canada. He and his wife, who was an archaeologist, went on to prove with this finding that the Norsemen were crossing the Atlantic Ocean to get to North America much before Christopher Columbus or John Cabot. It is the only site of a Norse settlement in Canada and North America except Greenland. This might have had a connection to Leif Eriksson’s settlement of Vinland.

Do you know: Helge was a famous author in Norway and wrote about his travels to remote places.
