Hard Work Pays

Once, there was a farmer. He lived in a small hut that he had built himself. His neighbour was a rich merchant who had a large house and a lot of money. He also had many people who worked for him. The merchant would always make fun of the farmer, “You poor man! You have to do all the work by yourself.” The farmer kept quiet and carried on with his work. Every night, he thanked God and went to bed very content. The Fairy Godmother watched over the farmer and blessed his work. On Christmas Eve, it rained for days and all the roads were flooded. The merchant had nothing to eat. The farmer gave the merchant some vegetables. The Fairy Godmother said, “The farmer may work day and night but he grows his own food. His labour saved him today.” The merchant now understood that hard work always pays.
