The Great Sphinx of Giza is a humungous limestone statue of a couchant Sphinx. It is situated on the west bank of the Nile, in Giza, Egypt. The Sphinx was constructed between 2558 and 2532 BCE.

Why it is special: The largest monolith statue in the world, the Sphinx is 73.5 metres long, 19.3 metres wide and 20.22 metres high. The oldest known monumental structure in the world, the Sphinx was carved down into the bedrock of the Giza plateau. However, whom it may have been built for, or even its purpose remains a mystery till date.
