A gliding joint is also referred as a plane or planar joint in which two flat surfaces of a bone move smoothly on each other. In this type of joint, the connecting surfaces of the involved bones are flat or slightly curved. These joints allow only gliding movement.
These are found between the carpal bones of the wrist; carpals and the metacarpals of the palm; tarsal bones of the ankle; and tarsals and the metatarsals of the foot.
