More than 4.5 cm in length, it has a wingspan of 6 cm. Their diet is comprised of varied insects, and also corn pests. This hornet dismembers its prey so that it may take back the most nutrient packed parts of its prey to the hive. The diet of the larvae is comprised of the same food which is first chewed up and made into a paste for the larvae to digest. The Japanese hornet’s venom is considered to be extremely painful.
