Once upon a time, Ganya and his son went into the forest to hunt. They did not find any hunt and soon started feeling hungry. It was evening and now they were tired. Throughout the day, they did not find any animal. At last, they killed a hyena. Sadly, the Nuers do not eat the hyena. They said to each other, “What should we do now? We are hungry and if we don’t eat the hyena, we will die; if we eat it, we will break our custom.” After thinking for a while, Ganya said, “I have an idea. First, let’s cut off the hyena’s head and throw it away.” So did they. Now, they thought again and then, cut off its legs and threw them away. At last, Ganya told his son to cut off its tail. He did it. Finally, he said, “Look, now it is a buck. We can now cook it and eat it.” They enjoyed their meal!
