The other gods pleaded with Ganesha to forgive the Moon-god for laughing at him. The kind-hearted Ganesha could not take back his curse completely. So he softened the curse a bit. “You shall lose your brilliance for fifteen days and regain it in the next fifteen days. You shall continue to wax and wane like this forever,” Ganesha told Chandra, “You shall remain inauspicious on the fourth day of the month of Bhadrapad Shukla,” he added. Chandra was advised by the gods to pray to Ganesha to win his forgiveness completely. So Chandra worshipped Ganesha with utmost devotion on the banks of River Jahanvi. Ganesha was pleased with Chandra’s devotion and told him that he would get back his lustre and shine. “Those who observe fast on the fourth day of each month (Krishna Paksh) will have to worship both of us. You will also be worshipped by people on the second day of every month,” he added. Since then, people started worshipping Chandra, too.
