Gajmukhasur Releases Shiva

Gajmukhasur grew agitated when the flautist told him that he couldn’t fulfil his wish. He insisted that the flautist should ask for anything in the world, and he would be given the same. Vishnu was waiting for this moment. He asked Gajmukhasur to release Shiva who was residing in his belly. Gajmukhasur was shocked with the flautist’s wish. Instantly, he knew that the flautist was Vishnu himself as Vishnu was the only one who could have known about Shiva’s whereabouts. The demon set Shiva free, since he had given his word to the flautist. But in the process of releasing Shiva, the demon died. Before breathing his last, the demon requested Shiva to enable his head to be remembered forever. His dying wish was honoured by Shiva, as he gave the demon’s head to his son Ganesha.
