You will need:
- Plastic bottle
- Needle
- Bucket
- Small stool
- Water
Conduct a simple yet totally fun experiment to see how gravity works and what it must be like with no gravity in outer space.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Take a plastic bottle and ask an adult to make a small hole on the side of the bottle with a needle, preferably towards the bottom.
- Fill the bottle with water at least three-fourths of the way.
- Placing a finger over the hole in the bottle, hold the bottle over the kitchen sink.
- When you remove your finger, the water drips from the hole in the bottle into the sink.
- Now take a bucket and place it outdoors. Place a stool near it. Fill up the bottle and keep a finger on the hole in the bottle so that it may not leak.
- Holding the bottle high over the bucket, drop the bottle into the bucket.
- When the bottle is dropped, look carefully at the hole in the bottle.
RESULT
The water does not leak out of the bottle. While the bottle was stationary
over the sink, gravity pushed the water downward. The easiest path out for it
is through the hole made in the bottle. However, when the bottle is dropped
from a height into the bucket, the water does not leak through the hole.
