You will need:
- Modelling clay
- Paper cups
- Shells or any other object for which you want to make a fossil cast
- Plaster of Paris (PoP)
- Water
You don’t need to dig up your backyard for fossils. Invite a few friends over and create your very own fossil casts.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Take the modelling clay and make it into a round smooth ball with no impressions.
- Place the clay in a paper cup with the smooth side up.
- Next press the side of the object you are making a cast, very gently into the clay.
- Remove the object gently, and don’t disturb the impression in the clay.
- In another paper cup, ask an adult to mix half a cup of Plaster of Paris (PoP) with 1/4th cup of water. Let the mixture thicken for 2-3 minutes.
- Gently pour the PoP mixture onto the clay. Remove air bubbles by tapping the cup.
- Leave the mixture untouched for 24 hours.
- Once your PoP has dried tear away the paper cup and remove the clay from the PoP cast.
RESULT
You fossil is ready. Fossils are incredible objects which help scientists to study
plant and animal life that existed all the way back in the age of dinosaurs.
The impression left behind of pre-historic flora and fauna helps us to better understand evolution.
