Once, a rich family lived in Benaras. They arranged for their son to marry a beautiful girl from a nearby village. Since they had not consulted their astrologer about this, he got filled with patigha or resentment. So, on the wedding day, he met the girl’s family and told them that the stars were unfavourable for the wedding. The frightened family did not turn up for the wedding! The girl’s family felt insulted and quickly found another groom. The girl was soon married to the new groom. The next day, the astrologer told the rich family that it was a perfect day for the wedding. However, when the rich family reached the village, they found that the girl had already married another man. A bhikshu, who saw the two families arguing, said, “You fools followed the stars, but lost the bride.”
Moral: Luck favours action, not stars.
