You will need:
- 2 funnels
- Sock
- Thick kitchen tissue
- 3 water glasses
- Mud
- Water
- Sand
- Glass jar
Have fun playing with different types of filters and understanding how they work. But DO NOT drink the water. It may be filtered, but is still full of bacteria.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Make a large batch of muddy water by mixing mud and water together.
- Figure out which filter works best to try and clean the water as much as possible.
- Cover the first glass with a sock by pulling the sock taut over the mouth of the glass.
- Cover the second glass with a funnel and thick kitchen tissue by folding the tissue 3 times and placing it inside the funnel. Place the funnel in the mouth of the glass.
- Cover the third glass with a funnel which is fitted with a folded kitchen tissue and sand over the kitchen tissue.
- Now slowly pour the muddy water into the 3 glasses through their respective filters and find out how well each filter works.
RESULT
While the sock acts as a quick filter, it does not clean the water entirely. Small particles slip through the sock filter. While the smaller holed tissue is a good filter, it takes long to filter the water, clogging up very fast. The sand and tissue paper work as a decent filter but begin to clog up. But sand being three-dimensional gives the water more ways downwards taking longer to clog up. While this process is OK to clear muddy water, it does not help to clean it into drinking water like the commercial filters which are filled with activated carbon. It absorbs large amounts of dirt onto its vast surface area.
