Farewell to Hanuman

The people of Ayodhya followed Sri Rama to the banks of River Sarayu. “If you go to heaven, O Lord, allow us to follow you there too,” said the citizens who had come with him. Rama told Vibheeshana, “Remain the King of Lanka as long as you live. Protect your subjects and follow the correct dharma, right conduct always.” Then Sri Rama turned to his great friend and devotee, Hanuman. “O son of Vayu, you came to earth just to offer me your devotion, didn’t you? May you live as long as my name is taken or my story told anywhere on earth!” Hanuman felt blessed, because he knew in his heart of hearts that Sri Rama’s name would be spoken always on earth. Sri Rama’s blessing was a blessing of immortality for him! The Ramayana is read and recited in various parts of the world, in homes and temples, in various languages.
