Long, long ago, it was believed that the way to remove suffering was to make the body suffer. So, a Bodhisattva decided to test this theory. The Bodhisattva became a holy man and gave up everything of comfort. He left the city to go into the forest and forced himself to eat mud and dirty water. He was so troubled that he ran away like a timid deer if he saw a human being. During winter, the Bodhisattva spent his days under the trees and nights out in the open. Thus, he struggled trying to bring peace to his mind. Just as the Bodhisattva was about to die, he saw a vision of himself being reborn in hell. Instantly, he knew that all the ways with which he had tortured his body were useless. So, he gave up his false beliefs and lived a peaceful life.
