Environment is such a major subject on which the whole world is working with the growing industrialization, population explosion, growing pollution, and erosion of land, there is a lot which can be done by taking Environment as a career. Today many universities from all over the world are engaged in work investigating and analysing various aspects of the Environment. Thus, environment as a career has great prospects. All the aspects which have a direct or indirect affect on our lives comes under environment. It is just impossible to have a healthy human life in the absence of a pure environment. This is the reason there is an increasing consciousness and awakening among the people. Efforts are made at international level to end this big disease called pollution. United States of America has also started giving importance to programmes related to Environment.
Bombardment of industrialization, unlimited cutting of trees, expansion of agriculture, problem of cutting the land, population explosion, ill-effects of radiography in the environment,due to atomic programmes, dirt in rivers, chemical use of in agriculture, are so many reasons causing pollution in environment. Due to pollution only, ill effects like depletion of ozone layer, emission of poisonous gases in the environment, ruining of forests, unhealthy human lives and acidic rain have come forward.
In fact, environment has a very deep relation with human growth. Pure environment is an invaluable heritage, which is transferred from one generation to another. People who have hopes for a healthy tomorrow and a better future should become serious regarding maintenance and supervision of environment. For safe and pure environment and better human health government has found some ways to control pollution by implementing several laws. Every year on 5th of June “World Environment Day” is being celebrated to bring awareness regarding pollution among the general public.

Environment Education is an invaluable effort to save the Environment. With this one can get better chance for a career. Many professional courses are been offered in “Environment Education” by Forest and Environment Ministry of Government of India. Those young men and women who have special interest in Environment can take admission in these job oriented and professional courses. Ministry offers special courses in “Forest Management” and Environmental Engineering”.
In 1982, Forest and Environment Ministry of Indian Government of India established “Indian Institute of Forest Management” in Bhopal. This institute provide 2 yrs. course in a “Forest Management”. Institute also offers 1 year M.Phil, level program in Resources Management. Candidates who are graduate from any recognized university are eligible for admission, but it is necessary to have minimum 50% marks at graduate or high secondary level. Before admission a written exam is organized at All India level. Candidates who clear this exam have to go through the process of group discussion and interview, after that the selection is done. In written exam, the knowledge of English language, problems and solutions of Environment, analysis of situation, written skills and general knowledge are examined. Young people who have interest in environment for them “Environmental Engineering” is a good course. Candidates who are graduate from any branch or faculty of engineering are eligible for admission.
In reality Environment is that branch of engineering which is not based on production, and is actually a part of Civil Engineering, which is a subject at graduation level. In many colleges it is taught as a part of chemistry engineering. Students of Environment Engineering thoroughly study the ill effects of pollution, waste material, dirt, and filth circulation etc. Apart from that they are also taught about the disadvantages of oil pollution, air pollution, atmospheric pollution and prevention from them. Under Environment engineering investigation is done on wild life, nuclear pollution, nuclear waste and remains, etc.
Time period of this course is one and a half year. Many institutes give admission to those candidates who have passed M.Sc. It is necessary that candidate should have command in Maths along with M.Sc. degree in Chemistry, Physic and Botany.
The young aspirants who have done post graduation in Environmental Engineering were given degree of Master of Technology (M.Tech.) and Master of Engineering (M.E.). Those candidates who have passed the “Gate” or “CSIR” exam were given preference in admission. There is a system of giving an yearly scholarship of Rs. 75000/- These students were also given books and housing allowances.
After acquiring education in the field of Environment any young men-women can reach from the position of Lecturer to Environment Controller. Many engineering colleges make direct appointments at the position of even principal. There are great prospects of jobs in World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, National Productivity Council, Engineering Consultants, alongwith institutes like IIT and CSIR etc.
However, engineering in Environment is now seen as a new career looking at the environment pollution. In the coming future, Environment Engineering would be one field where there would be golden opportunities for a career.
