In the field of leather technology, opportunities have increased to such an extent that every aspirant would like to grab it. Leather technology is one career which has brought Indian products in front of rest of the world. As there are many possibilities of appointment in their field, young people are keen to enter into it. The overall development in the field of leather technology is also a symbol of this success.
India has the fourth position in the world, in the export of leather products. Keeping in mind the development of leather business, government of India has established Central Leather Research Centre. Inspite of the great possibilities of moving ahead in this field, there is always a scarcity of capable and trained people. To overcome this deficiency, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India has established Footwear Design Development Institute in Noida (U.P.) in the year 1986, which is known as a renowned institute for providing technical training.
There is an increment in jobs in leather technology at the same speed at which the leather business is expanding. As far as animals are concerned, India is world’s biggest country. Therefore, raw material is available in abundance, which is desired for the leather business. Leather business is divided into 3 parts. They are preservation, designing and manufacturing. Leather business starts with the consumption of raw material. First of all selection of useful leather is being done followed by sorting. Leather specialists assesses its quality and usefulness because for different products different kinds of leather is used. After classifying leather on the basis of its quality, design of products are prepared. Later on the leather is preserved according to it’s need.

People who have done B.Tech. or M.Tech. can do successfully in this field. Along with this people who have done Management Courses and Diploma in Footwear Technology. Footwear designing are easily appointed with attractive salary. The candidate should be a graduate in leather technology for admission in different courses related to leather business. Before admission in B.Tech. course, it is necessary to clear 10+2 or Intermediate with physics, chemistry and maths as subjects.
Those candidates who fulfill the above eligibility criteria can get admission in B.Tech. course of Leather Technology, which is being offered by different institutes. After having specialization in the leather business through B.Tech., one can take admission in a M. Tech. course. For admission in all these courses, students have to go through the process of joint Entrance Exams. B.Tech. and M.Tech. course in Leather Technology are of 2 years and 4 years duration respectively.
Under the long term course in Leather Technology, there is one more course, where young men and women can receive training according to their needs and requirements. Candidates who are post graduate from any faculty or have an engineering degree are eligible for admission in Management in Footwear Technology (M.F.T). Time period for this course is 1½ year. During training information regarding footwear production technology and general management is also been given.
One should be graduate from any faculty or should have an engineering degree for admission in the 1½ year course of “Supervisory in Footwear Technology” (S.F.T.). In this course, candidates were given information regarding hardcore Footwear Technology. In this course the students were also taught basics of leather technology, cutting, clogging, lasting, bottoming, component concepts of designing and pattern cutting, quality control supervision, and basic management. For admission in Diploma in Footwear Designing (DFD), candidates who are graduate from any faculty are eligible for admission. The motive of this course is to make candidates “Professional Footwear Designer”. Under the footwear designing, training is also been given about pattern making, grading, teen pattern, collection planning, forecasting and marketing. Time period of this course is 1½ years.
In the field of leather technology short term courses are also been offered, with which one can become self independent. Time period of Footwear Manufacturing course is 6 months. Candidates who have cleared 10+2 or intermediate exams are eligible for admission in this course. In this course information is given about designing, closing, component, finishing, quality control, etc.
In Leather Technology; there are other courses also viz. “Laboratory Technician Course (6 months), Basic Shoe Making Course (3 months), Basic Designing Course (3 months), Operating Course in cutting, lasting and components ( 3 months), Executive Development Programme (1½ months), Basic Designing and Pattern Cutting (1 month), Supervisor Upgrades Course in cutting, closing, and costing, (2 months), Advance Designing (2 weeks) Orientation Course for Managers (1 week) etc. Trained people in different courses are appointed on different positions. They could also start business of their own.
