Edward, the large work-horse at the farm, was tired of standing in his stall at the stable. “I spend the whole day at the fields, take the cart to the market and back, give rides to Farmer Bowles and his family, and at the end of the day I’m exhausted!” he announced to Becky, the small foal who stood beside him. “I need a little rest, don’t I?” “But we horses can sleep standing up too, Uncle Ed,” suggested Becky. “You’re young,” said Edward, “You don’t understand.” One day, however, Farmer Bowles forgot to close the door of the stalls. Edward nudged the door and it opened! He trotted out and found a large amount of hay lying in one corner of the barn. He settled down happily on it and was soon fast asleep! In the next morning, Farmer Bowles was amused to see him sleeping comfortably.
