King Drupada was burning with anger at the humiliation he suffered at Drona’s hands. He wandered to many places, looking for a preceptor who would teach him how he could have a son who would avenge his humiliation by defeating Dronacharya some day. Seeing the feminine qualities of his son Shikhandi he felt disgusted. At last, he met two Brahmins named Yaja and Upayaja. On the insistence of the Brahmins he performed a great sacrifice to have the son he desired. His sacrifice was a great success. Out of the sacrificial fire emerged two glowing beings. One was his son, Dhrishtadyumna, who adorned with armour and weapons appeared out of the fire.
The son was followed by the dusky and beautiful Krishnaa. As she was the daughter of the King of Panchala, she was also called Panchali. As she was the daughter of King Drupad, she was also called Draupadi. King Drupad felt delighted to have been blessed with Dhrishtdyumna and Draupadi. Now, he hoped to avenge the insult through his children. He gave both of them the training of weapons equally. Soon they grew up. King Drupad felt worried about his daughter’s marriage.
