As he reached the outskirts of Ayodhya, Dharmaraja transformed himself into a brahmana. This, he thought, would help him reach Sri Rama more easily. But Rama, blessed with inner vision, recognised him and himself came to the palace gates to receive Dharmaraja. He took the brahmana inside and asked him the purpose of his visit. “I have a very private message for you from Lord Vishnu,” said the brahmana, “Please make sure that there is no one overhearing us. If anyone does, he must be punished with death.” Rama came out and ordered Lakshmana to stand guard outside the room, saying, “Make sure no one hears our conversation. Otherwise, I will have to order the death penalty for him.” Lakshmana stood at the door to ensure that nobody entered the room or heard Rama’s conversation.
