Colder Water (Chemistry Experiments)

You might have seen a Kulfi maker adding salt to ice before he freezes the Kulfi moulds. Have you ever wondered why? Find out.
Things Required:
1 small metal can
Outdoor thermometer
1 tablespoonful of table salt
Crushed ice

Directions:
Fill the can with crushed ice. Cover the ice with water. Insert the thermometer. Wait for 30 seconds and record the temperature of the icy water. Add 1 tablespoonful of table salt to the icy water and stir very gently with the thermometer. Wait for 30 seconds and record the temperature.
This Is What Happens:
The temperature lowers when the salt is added.
Science Behind It:
It takes energy for the salt crystals to break apart into tiny particles small enough to dissolve in the water. This needed energy is obtained by removing heat from the water, which causes the water to be colder.
