Common name : Coffee berry borer
Scientific name : Hypothenemus hampei
Family : Curulionidae
Native to : Africa
Interesting fact : This tiny beetle has got its name because of the fact that it is one of the most harmful pests to the coffee berry. Not more than 2.2 mm in length, this tiny black beetle drills holes into the berry, where the female lays approximately 50 eggs. For every male borer, there are 13 females. The male never leaves the berry and lives inside it for its entire lifespan, which as adults is not more than 45 days. Multiple generations can live inside one berry resulting in nearly 100 bugs being found inside one fruit.
