Chimaeras are cartilaginous fish with 38 species, found in depths of 2500 metres or more. They are black to brownish-grey with elongated bodies and bulky heads with a single gill opening. A venomous spine in front of the dorsal fin is used in defence. It feeds on small fish and invertebrates. Eggs are laid in spindle-shaped, leathery cases.
