Its hollow hair fur helps it to adapt to colder climates and helps it stay afloat when in water. Some species migrate from taiga to tundra in search of pastures. The caribou feed on lichen (caribou moss), a staple of their diet which takes centuries to grow; sustained deforestation has threatened the food source and thus the life of the animal.
