This is a biennial plant. The plant grows up to 1 feet tall. The basal leaves are dark green, shiny and deeply lobed with a tall yellow flower spike in spring. It can be grown almost all year round, with protection in colder months. The plant can be easily grown in ordinary soil with plenty of light or part shade. This plant self-seeds and supplies us with lots of greens over winter and early spring. The leaves of this plant are used in sandwiches and salads. They can be cooked like spinach, or used in soup and fish.
