Bagan is an ancient city that used to be the capital of the kingdom of Pagan. It is situated in Mandalay region of Myanmar. Bagan was founded in the 2nd century AD and fortified in 849 AD.
Why it is special: Picturesque in every way, the landscape of Bagan is spotted with pagodas throughout the city. The city was the capital of the first kingdom that unified regions, which later formed modern-day Myanmar. Between the 11th and 13th centuries, more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were built within the city.
