It is an annual flowering plant. The plant blooms from late spring to summer. It grows up to 3 feet tall. Most plants grow roughly 1 to 3 feet tall and have short, lance-shaped lyrate-pinnatifid leaves. The charming delicate flowers come in a variety of brilliant colours, and make excellent cut flowers. Each flower has overlapping bracts. The flowers attract butterflies. It is grown as an ornamental plant in gardens, where several cultivars have been selected with varying pastel colours, including pink and purple. A decoction of cornflower is effective in treating conjunctivitis, and as a wash for tired eyes.
