This belongs to the cabbage family and is a perennial plant. But it is widely planted in rock gardens worldwide as an ornamental plant. It forms a low cushion of evergreen leaves, literally smothered by flowers for several weeks. It grows up to 6 to 8 inches tall. The flower colour ranges from mauve/lilac, mixed purple, red, to pink. There are about 12 species of this plant. The purple flowers are held in small bunches above unusual plump foliage. The plants look superb when grown on a dry stone wall where the plants can cascade down over the edges.
