Carnaby was the farm hand who worked for Farmer Umbridge when the harvest season arrived. Whenever anyone came to the Farmer Umbridge for any instructions, he would say, “Ask Carnaby.” One day, this became a problem. The tailor sent a parcel for the Farmer’s wife. Without checking, Farmer Umbridge said, “Ask Carnaby.” Carnaby took the parcel and opened it, for he couldn’t read. Out fell several dresses! They fell on the wet grass and some of them were stained. He ran to give the dresses to the Farmer’s wife. Mrs Umbridge came out, yelling her head off. “You men! Can’t you read? It’s for Mrs Umbridge!” Poor Carnaby! He was so embarrassed and ashamed. He offered to leave the farm, but Mrs Umbridge had a real punishment for him. “Carnaby, you are going to learn to read!” she declared. And now Carnaby sat at the kitchen table learning his alphabet!
