Abdullah’s Gold

In the desert, there was an oasis where a strange man lived with his son Abdullah. This man had hidden a large pot of gold in a hollow palm tree. The man grew old and when he knew he was dying, he called Abdullah and told him about the pot of gold. He gave Abdullah secret instructions about how to find the correct palm tree.
After his father had died, Abdullah went to look for the tree. But he simply couldn’t find it! He sat down exhausted and wondered what to do.
Now Abdullah had a donkey. The donkey was very wise and he had heard all that the old man had said. He knew Abdullah was being very foolish-looking for the gold in broad daylight. It would be seen by robbers who would kill him for the gold.
“Abdullah,” said the donkey, “Let’s go home.” Abdullah did not know his donkey was special. He looked around, hearing the voice. Then he realised it must have been his donkey who spoke. He sat up, and got surprised.
“You spoke?” he asked, “How did you do that?”

“My name is Bashir,” said the donkey, “I was a magician and when I disobeyed a witch, she turned me into a helpless lazy donkey.”
“Can you help me find the gold?” asked Abdullah.
“Yes, I can because I can still do magic,” explained Bashir in excitement.
So that night, Abdullah and his donkey returned to the oasis. Bashir looked at the trees. Then he told Abdullah to pick up a red stone that lay there and put it at the foot of one of the palm trees. Abdullah did that and then Bashir rubbed his nose against the trunk and whispered something.
A slit appeared in the trunk and soon Abdullah saw the hollow, with the pot of gold. He took it and put it in the sack on Bashir’s back. They went back home.
People began to notice that Abdullah was wearing fine clothes and he had done up his house. He had set up a shop in the market to sell his wares. His neighbours began to be jealous of him.

One day, two men with masked faces entered his house to steal some of his wealth. Bashir saw them and brayed loudly. Abdullah woke up and they ran away. When this happened again, Abdullah decided to shift to another oasis for safety.
He took Bashir with him, saying, “Bashir, you are the real gold I found! I can earn enough money for the two of us. But I’ll never find another friend like you!”
