A Wise Old Goat

A herd of goats lived on a mountain-side. They grazed upon the fresh grass all day and slept in a large cave at night. A pair of wolves also lived in a cave not too far away. When they saw the goats, they were very happy. Every day, they ate one or two goats.
Slowly, the herd was killed till one last goat was left. This was a very wise old goat. She used to hide whenever she saw the wolves coming, so she had survived. The wolf husband told his wife they must get this goat too. But she was very clever, so they would have to use some trick.
He told his wife, “I’ll act dead in front of our cave. You go and call her. I am sure she will come out of sympathy for you. Then I’ll attack and kill her.” So, his wife went to meet the goat.

The wife of the wolf talked to her sweetly. “Please come and help me bury my husband,” she pleaded. The goat was not easily persuaded, but finally she came out of the cave. “You walk ahead,” she told the wife. So, the goat followed the wolf.
The wolf had been waiting for long, lying there and acting dead. He became impatient and slowly lifted his head to see if his wife was bringing the goat. Unfortunately, the goat saw him move and ran back swiftly to her cave.
“You idiot!” scolded his wife, “Why couldn’t you keep still? I’ll try once more to see if I can persuade her. Please don’t do anything stupid now!” And she went back to the goat’s cave.
“My dear, you are a miracle-worker. My husband seemed to come alive just seeing you. Please come once. It will bring my husband back to life.”
The goat was very sharp. She realized that the wolves were trying to trick her. So, she called out, “I am so happy. I’ll definitely come. I will bring three of my dear friends who will also be of great help.”
“Who are your friends?” asked the wife.
“They are two hounds and a bull-dog. They will be here in a little while,” explained the goat.

The wife looked terrified. Two hounds and a bull-dog! She ran all the way to her cave to tell her husband. “Let us get out of here before they arrive,” he said, “Or we will be torn to shreds. Let’s go!” The goat watched as the two wolves ran for their life and never looked back.
