One day, Mulla Nasruddin’s son said, “Father, I want to marry someone who is intelligent and expressive.” So as part of his plan, Mulla led his son to the town square and slapped him in front of all the people. Then he exclaimed, “This is what you get for doing exactly what I told you to do!” A young lady saw this and remarked, “Stop hitting him! How can you punish him for obeying what you said?” Mulla’s son said, “She seems like the right woman for me.” Mulla said, “She is certainly expressive and intelligent, but perhaps there’s a woman who is even better.” So, they went to the neighbouring town square and repeated the same scene. This time, a young lady remarked, “Only a fool would follow orders so blindly.” Mulla said, “The first woman was intelligent and expressive but this woman is sensible.” Thus, Mulla’s son and the young lady were married.
