A Stormy Night

It was a stormy night. Carl and Sandra were returning home after spending the weekend at their parents’ home. One the way, they had to pass through a deserted highway. Rain poured and lightning flashed almost blinding Carl, who was driving the car. Each time the thunder roared, Sandra grasped Carl in fear. “Do you want me to stop?” asked Carl, concerned. “Yes, please do; this thunderstorm is scaring me,” said Sandra. Carl immediately applied the brakes and halted the car on the side. A minute after they had stopped, the car started sliding down. The pavement was slippery and inclined downwards. The car finally came to a halt at the bottom of the slope. “What’s happening?” asked Sandra, in fear. She was quivering with fear. “Don’t worry; it’s just a slope,” said Carl, trying to assuage her fears. Carl then looked through the rain-drenched windows at the stormy night.

The Car is Stuck

“I had better check if the car is damaged,” said Carl. “Do you really have to get out and check? It is getting scary,” said Sandra. “It will take just a minute or two,” said Carl, and he got out of the car. Through the glass panes, Sandra could see his shadowy figure. A few minutes later, Carl got back into the car with a smile. “The car seems to be fine for now, but it’s wheel-deep in mud. Both of us won’t be able to manage it. We will need help,” he said. “Where will we get help here and at this hour?” said Sandra. It was past midnight. “I will have to try at least,” said Carl. He then turned off the headlights and rolled up all the window panes. “Do not open the doors, till I come back,” he said. Neither of them mentioned it, but both recalled the incident that had happened at the same place years ago.

The Deserted Road

The rumour they had heard about was of an ‘Axe Man’. It was said that long time ago a mad man had once taken an axe and killed his family with it. Many people in the area claimed to have seen the spirit of the man roaming on the road. Most avoided the road at night, as they believed the ‘Axe Man’ would kill them, too. As soon as Carl walked off in search of help, a loud scream pierced the cold, dark night air. Sandra sat up in her seat. ‘Who was that?’ she thought. She then heard a loud thump on the road, followed by a scary gurgling sound. It was coming from just outside the car. Sandra started perspiring. She was curious to look what was happening outside but was too scared to even roll down the windowpanes. As she sat in silence in the car, she heard another sound from outside.

The Man with the Axe

Sandra pricked her ears. It was a soft sound. As the wind blew outside, she could hear the soft thuds on the mud ahead. It sounded as if someone was walking stealthily towards her. Suddenly, she was blinded by some bright lights. ‘Maybe Carl found a police patrol car,’ thought Sandra, and she got out of the car. As she squinted through the bright lights, she got a shock of her life. There just a few yards from her stood, what the people called the ‘Axe Man.’ Sandra screamed for help with all her might. Just then, she felt someone grasping her hands. Fortunately, it was Carl. He had just returned and he, too, had seen the ‘Axe Man’. “Run,” he said and they both ran as fast as they could. After a minute or two, they were able to get a lift from a passing car and managed to reach home safely.
