You will need:
- Plastic bottle
- Uncooked rice
- Pencil
Use friction to create an amazing magic trick with simple household ingredients and some practice.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Take an empty dry plastic bottle and fill it till the brim with uncooked rice grains.
- Keep tapping the bottle in between while filling it with rice so as to remove air pockets.
- When the bottle is completely filled, slowly insert a pencil with the point facing down, into the bottle.
- Remove the pencil, and repeat this motion of inserting the pencil and removing it from the bottle.
- Eventually, you will not be able to remove the pencil. Lift the entire bottle by just pulling the pencil upwards.
RESULT
When the pencil is pushed into the bottle, the rice is pushed together into the air pockets, to make room for the pencil. With every motion of the pencil being pushed into the bottle and then being removed, the grains of rice move closer together, creating friction by rubbing against one another. With the grains packed so tightly together, the friction becomes overwhelmingly strong, to the extent that it pushes against the pencil, getting it stuck to the rice. When the pencil is moved upwards, the whole bottle rises.
