Slimy Friends (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Large glass jar
  2. Planting soil+sand
  3. Black chart paper+tape
  4. 5-6 healthy earthworms
  5. Water

Earthworms do not always generate a positive response. Their squishy bodies always make us squirm. But understand and observe them through this experiment and learn about their usefulness.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Take your glass jar and fill it till the top with the alternating layers of planting soil and sand. Start with 1 inch layer of soil, then sand, then soil again and so on.
  2. Add some water into the glass jar to make the soil a bit squishy.
  3. Place your earthworms on top of the last layer of soil.
  4. Don’t put a lid on the jar, as earthworms need air to breathe.
  5. Cover the outside of the glass jar with black chart paper and tape.
  6. After a week observe the earthworms.

RESULT

The earthworms within no time would have made their way down into the lower layers of soil and sand. This is because they do not like sunlight. After a week, when you remove the black chart paper, you will notice that the earthworms would have travelled through the glass jar and mixed up the layers of soil. Once you have observed them, return these little bugs back into their natural habitat. Earthworms are necessary for the ecosystem. Their bodies create compost, enriching the soil with loads of nutrients.
